What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is fast becoming the preferred method for residential lawns, erosion control and re-vegetative ground coverage.  It is a relatively new process where seed, water, fertilizer, mulch, and a holding agent (tackifier) are mixed together and applied through a specialized machine called a hydroseeder or sometimes referred to as a hydromulcher.  The soft green mat that is applied is most often a wood cellulose fiber or sometimes a wood /paper combination mulch.  This process, when mixed into a slurry, performs the following function:

·        Water Retention- Because the wood fiber can retain up to ten times there weight in water, the seeds are kept moist and results in thicker and quicker coverage.

·        Soil Retention- The wood fiber mulch and holding agent (tackifier) also help prevent wind and water erosion.  You get uniform results because slurry is applied under pressure for positive contact with the soil.

·        Protection- The wood fibers protect the seeds from the sun and help maintain a desired soil temperature.  The slurry forms an almost perfect micro-climate for the new seed to germinate rapidly and grow.

WHO USES HYDROSEEDING?

  • Oil field/pipeline Companies              Residential Contractors
  • State DOT projects                              Reclamation projects
  • Wind energy projects                          Golf courses
  • Landfills                                               Farm and Ranch owners
  •                                 Residential lawns

Hydroseeding can be utilized on steep slopes where other methods are not possible.  When the slurry dries it forms a protective blanket which allows almost 100% seed growth. Hydroseeding can save you more than 75% of the cost of sod.  Hydroseeding can produce turf which is just as nice as sod in a very short period of time.  Call to find out more and see how hydroseeding can work for you.
